A glass overlay snuff bottle, Chinese, Qianlong (1736-1795).

The bottle has a single sapphire blue glass overlay on a cloudy bubble-suffused ground.

The former is carved on each side with a design of carp swimming amongst aquatic plants, 5.3cm.

The carving is highly refined and an example of the finest overlay work.

Such work was generally of a good standard throughout China at this time, but a craftsman capable of such extremely high quality carving is likely to have been sent to work in the Beijing Palace Workshops which demanded the best craftsmen from each region.
