A George III carved giltwood pole screen, circa 1780.

The oval banner of this elegant small pole screen features very fine quillwork.

This is centred by a watercolour depicting a classical figure in a horse-drawn chariot amongst clouds and set in a bead-moulded and ribbon-tied frame.

On a baluster-turned, fluted and leaf-carved column and circular moulded husk-carved plinth, 143cm by 33cm.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory, in a later addition, records: ‘The Japan Closet … screen gilt stand filigree paperwork with a drawing in centre, paper cover with green ribbon and bow.’
