A George III Carrara marble chimneypiece by John Richter, circa 1790.

The moulded mantel is above a porphyry circle-inlaid edge and a similar blind-fluted frieze is inset with sprigged motifs.

The jambs are inlaid with porphyry ovals and circles within leafy fronds.

These enclose a steel grate with cast electroplate rococo-style mounts, dated 5th June 1844, 148cm by 194cm.

The latter was almost certainly acquired in preparation for the three day Royal Visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1844.
