A George II mahogany pole screen, circa 1759.

The arched banner encloses an early 18th Century gros-point needlework panel which depicts the Virgin and Child in a landscape setting.

It is on a baluster-turned gadrooned stem and tripod base, with moulded toes.

The reverse of the panel is decorated with an 18th Century Oriental still life, 142cm.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘the West Dressing room … a fire screen cover’d with India paper on a walnut tree claw.’

At this time, all things Oriental were referred to as Indian.
