An ebony casket, Florentine, late 17th Century.

Set with relief carved pietra dura panels of fruit, within borders of lapis lazuli and with gilt-bronze scroll feet; the top with a bunch of amethystine quartz grapes, width 43.2cm.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records:  ‘The dressing room to the George rooms….1 Box Ebony & with Grapes upon ye Top-agate.’
