A Derby figure of the actor James Quinn in the role of Falstaff, circa 1765/70.

The figure appears in the 1804 Burghley Inventory: ‘3rd George room, a figure of Sir John Falstaff.’

The sword and the shield, which had been missing for many years, were replaced in 2011.

James Quinn (1693-1766) was an actor of Irish descent whose career on the stage, from his first appearance in 1712, spanned more than forty years.

His performances in the role of Falstaff were considered to be the finest of the day.
