A Miniature of a a Child, by Anthony Stewart (1773-1846).

Circular, on ivory, in a fitted maroon leather case, diameter 5.1cm. Circa 1830.

The identity of the child is uncertain, but it is possible that it could be Lady Mary Cecil, the eldest daughter of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867).

She was born in 1832, but the sitter is very young, the miniature carries no date and the rather open-ended dating given to it could certainly make it feasible.

Anthony Stewart initially trained in Edinburgh with a landscape artist, before turning to miniature painting, which he pursued in both Edinburgh and London.

He specialised in painting children and painted many miniatures of the young Princess Victoria throughout her childhood.
