A celadon group, Japanese, 17th Century.

The group, comprised of a Buddhist priest seated on the back of a buffalo, is 24.5cm in height and 23.5 cm in length. The smiling, bearded ascetic is modelled with hands, upper body and head left in the biscuit, the fan, which he carries in his left hand, his clothes and the buffalo, are covered in a pale green felspathic glaze. The group appears in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: “My Lords Bedd Chamber….China over ye Chimney…a preist on a Bufalow”.
