A celadon group, Japanese, 17th Century.

The group is comprised of a Buddhist priest seated on the back of a buffalo.

The smiling, bearded ascetic is modelled with hands, upper body and head left in the biscuit.

The fan, which he carries in his left hand, his clothes and the buffalo, are covered in a pale green felspathic glaze, 24.5cm high, 23.5cm long.

The group appears in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: ‘My Lords Bedd Chamber….China over ye Chimney…a preist on a Bufalow.’
