A Cartoon for the East Wall of the Heaven Room at Burghley, by Antonio Verrio (1639-1707).

72.4cm by 57cm.

The cartoon shows the Cyclops working at Vulcan’s forge, set against an architectural background, in what was perhaps Verrio’s original idea for the decoration of the east wall.

It was purchased by David, 6th Marquess of Exeter (1905-1981) at Christie’s in 1961.

The only other known Verrio sketch for work carried out at Burghley was for the ceiling and is now in the Northampton Museum.
