A Butchered Ox, by Frans Snyders (1579-1657).

Oil on canvas, 338cm by 230cm. Signed on a chair rail F Snyders and indistinctly dated.

Snyders was a Flemish painter of animals and still lifes, although the present subject appears to be without precedent in the artist’s oeuvre.

His work was much admired by Rubens, amongst others, and Rubens frequently commissioned Snyders to paint animals, fruit and still lifes in his own paintings.
