The fan has delicately painted scenes of elegant figures in a landscape.
These are complemented by the upper sections of the ivory open-work slats which are beautifully decorated with flowers, birds and insects and embellished with pieces of mother-of-pearl.
It belonged to Isabella, wife of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867), and was carried by her at a grand ball, held at Burghley on 14th November 1844, marking the conclusion of a successful three day visit by Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort.
